This archive is a partnership between the Estate of Brad Johns and the Reid Public History Institute at UNLV. It preserves the legacy of an influential American hair colorist, artist, and cultural tastemaker.

This self-curated archive include Brad’s selected and presented collections of his own documents and art, including jewelry, glass, acrylic paintings, and sculptural hair ornaments. The collection’s material culture features jean jackets and vests, silver-painted spike-heeled boots, workman-inspired jumpsuits, and his signature salon uniform: black pants, T-shirt, belt, and boots, all made by Dickies.

At the Institute's headquarters in fabulous Las Vegas, MA and PhD students in H. 749 and H. 750 gain hands-on experience preserving, digitizing, researching, and interpreting these materials. The archive supports education, scholarship, and public engagement while preparing Brad’s legacy for long-term museum stewardship.

Selected and assembled by Brad Johns himself, these materials preserve a life and career. Seen here are the first of many. This yearlong effort will present new material as students enrolled in H. 750  preserve, catalog, digitize, and research the collection according to archival best practices.
